Customer Tags

Customer tags are the labels you put on customers in Shopify, such as wholesale or vip, and By the Numbers reads them.

How It Works

You can build segments from customer tags and see them on a customer’s page. By the Numbers only reads tags: you add, change and remove them in Shopify, on the customer. Nothing you do in By the Numbers changes a tag in Shopify.

In Segments

In the segment editor, Customer tags is a field under the Tags heading. It takes is one of, is not one of and only includes: see Comparisons in Segment Filters.

  • Capitalization and spaces at either end don’t matter. VIP matches vip.
  • The whole tag has to match. wholesale doesn’t match a customer tagged wholesale 2024.
  • Type in the value box and pick from the suggestions. They list up to 20 of the tags your customers have, with the most common first. Typing narrows the list.

Once a segment uses a tag, you can pick that segment in the Segment dropdown on reports and dashboards, and sync it to your email and ad platforms. Some preset segments are built on tags, such as Wholesale Customers.

On a Customer’s Page

A customer’s page shows a Tags card when the customer has tags. By the Numbers shows them in lowercase, whatever their capitalization in Shopify.

When a Change Shows Up

Segments read from a summary of each customer. It’s rebuilt every 12–26 hours on most subscriptions, and less often on others. A tag you add or remove in Shopify reaches your segments at the next rebuild: see How Often Is My Data Updated?.

What It Means for You

  • Tag in Shopify first. A segment can only match a tag that exists on your customers. If the suggestions don’t list the tag, no customer has it yet, or the summary hasn’t been rebuilt since you added it.
  • Keep tags consistent. wholesale and wholesalers are 2 different tags. Pick one spelling and use it everywhere.
  • Customer tags aren’t order tags. A customer tag belongs to the customer. An order tag belongs to one order.
  • Segments can use both. Under Tags, the fields are Customer tags, Any order tag, First order tag and Last order tag. Reports have an Order tags field under Filters.
