Segment Picker With Previews

The segment picker is the list you choose a customer segment from. It searches every segment, and it shows a preview of the highlighted one before you apply it.

Segment Picker With Previews is switched on shop by shop. If your store doesn’t have it yet, the Segment control on reports lists only your starred segments, with no preview. Everything else about segments works the same.

How It Works

Where You’ll See It

The picker opens from these places:

  • The Segment field in a report’s filter bar.
  • The segment chip on a dashboard’s filter bar, and the segment setting in a dashboard card’s filters.
  • The Segment row of a report’s Compare panel.

Choose a segment and it filters that report, dashboard or card. All Customers at the top of the list removes the filter. In the Compare panel, Same as Report at the top uses the report’s own segment.

What the List Shows

The list is in 2 groups: Your Segments, which are the ones built by someone on your team, and Standard, which are the segments built into By the Numbers.

With the search box empty, the list shows your starred segments and the one you’ve applied. Show All Segments at the bottom adds the rest, dimmed. If you turned on Hide Standard Customer Segments from dropdowns in Preferences, the Standard group starts collapsed, and Show opens it.

Searching

Type in the search box. It searches every segment, starred or not. It matches the segment’s name, its rules and the product names in them, its description, who made it, and whether it is Standard, Custom or Copilot AI.

When nothing matches, the list says No Segments Match and your search text. Clear Search empties the box. Describe It in Plain English opens the segment builder, where you can describe the group you want.

Use ↑ and ↓ to move, Enter to pick and Esc to close.

The Preview

Highlight a segment and the panel beside the list shows its details. The panel stays the same size as you move down the list, and scrolls if a segment’s rules are too long to fit. It shows:

  • The kind of segment: Standard, Custom or Copilot AI. A custom segment also says when it was created and by whom, such as Created Oct 3, 2026 by Priya Shah. A Copilot AI segment is one Copilot suggested and a teammate added, and it says Added instead of Created. Hover over the Copilot AI badge to see what it means. A Standard segment says nothing more.
  • Who’s In It: the rules as a bulleted list, such as Total orders: at least 5. A heading says whether a customer must match all of them, any of them or none of them, or must not match all of them. A segment with one rule shows just that line, with no heading.
  • Rule values: amounts use your store’s currency, and a list of values shows the first 8, then the count of the rest, such as or 4 more. A product in a rule shows by name, which is looked up again after each data rebuild and when you save the segment.
  • Customers: how many customers are in it, and their share of all your customers, including those who haven’t ordered.
  • 7-day and 30-day change: how the segment’s size moved, as a percentage.
  • Size chart: the segment’s size over the last 90 days.
  • Lifetime Value: the typical value, which is the middle one, and the range of the middle half of customers. The bar is scaled across your segments, so you can compare them.
  • Total Sales, Avg Order Value, Orders per Customer, Since Last Order, Avg Lifespan and Marketing Opt-In: how the group buys. Since Last Order is a median. Orders per Customer counts every customer in the group, including those who haven’t ordered. Avg Lifespan is the average number of days between a customer’s first and last order, over customers who have ordered, so a customer with one order counts as 1 day.

In a Compare panel, each stat also shows the report’s segment, after “vs”.

On a phone, tap a row to open a shorter preview under it, with a Use This Segment button.

How Fresh the Numbers Are

The numbers are counted when your customer data is rebuilt. How Often Is My Data Updated? has the schedule. The footer reads Stats as of and the date.

When the newest numbers are older than 2 rebuilds, a notice says so. Segments still filter reports correctly.

The picker keeps a segment’s size history from the day it was first counted. It can’t be filled in backward.

The size chart appears at 7 days of history. The 7-day change needs more than 7 days, and the 30-day change needs more than 30. Until then the preview says when each will appear.

When you change a segment’s rules, its history starts over, and the preview says so.

A segment can show a notice instead of numbers:

  • Stats Not Ready Yet: it hasn’t been counted. It’s counted at the next rebuild, and you can still pick it.
  • Can’t Count This Segment: its rules are too complex to count ahead of time, or can’t be counted as written. It still filters reports.
  • A locked segment can be previewed but not applied. It shows no numbers.

Starring

Select the star on a row to star or unstar that segment. A star belongs to the segment, not to you, so it changes the list for everyone on your team. A new custom segment starts starred.

Segments in Copilot Answers

When Copilot names a segment in an answer, it appears as a small chip with the segment’s name and size. Hover over the chip to see a card with the rules, the size, the typical lifetime value and the share opted in to marketing. The card also gives the date of the numbers.

Open in Segments on the card opens the segment.

The same chip appears in the Segments card on Customer Detail.

What It Means for You

Check the preview before you filter a report. A segment with a few customers gives a noisy report, and the preview shows its size first.

Compare the 30-day change across segments to see which groups are growing. Star the segments your team uses most, so they’re in the list when it opens.
