Referrers

Referrers lists the websites that sent visitors to your store, with the sessions, bounce, conversions and revenue from each.

The Referrers report, with five summary cards and a table with one row per referring domain.

How It’s Calculated

Each row is the domain of the page a visitor came from, taken from the first page view of each session inside the date range. The table lists every domain, with the most sessions first. The columns are:

  • Referrer: the domain, such as google.com. It is shown as it appears in the referring address, so www.example.com and example.com are separate rows. Sessions with no referrer show as (direct / none).
  • Sessions: visits that started from that domain.
  • Visitors: the number of different browsers.
  • Conversions: the number of sessions that ended in a purchase.
  • Conversion Rate: Conversions divided by Sessions.
  • Bounce Rate: the share of sessions with only 1 event recorded.
  • Revenue: the value of those purchases. It is the total of the Shopify order each purchase links to: items minus discounts, plus shipping, plus tax that isn’t already in the prices, minus refunds. Where das Pixel couldn’t match an order, it uses the value it saw at checkout.
  • Order Linked: the share of conversions that matched a Shopify order.

Summary Cards

The cards above the table are Referrers, Sessions, Conversions, Revenue and Order Match Rate. Referrers counts the named domains and leaves out the (direct / none) row.

With Compare on, the first four show their change. Order Match Rate is the match rate across all rows, weighted by conversions.

What Counts

  • das Pixel records a referrer only for visitors who allowed marketing, while Track Marketing is on. A session without one lands in (direct / none), whether the visitor declined or really came straight to your store. The report therefore under-counts referrers, and leans toward visitors who allowed marketing. Consent & Tracking Coverage Health shows how many sessions came from visitors who allowed marketing.
  • Visitors who declined analytics cookies, or who opted out of the sale or sharing of their data while Require Sale-of-Data Consent is on, aren’t recorded. Known bots are left out.
  • Only events inside the date range count, in your store’s time zone.
  • Turn on Live to refresh the report every 30 seconds. Without it, a figure can be up to 10 minutes old.

A warning shows above the report when das Pixel saw less than 70% of your online-store orders in the last 30 days. This report has no Segment, Sales Channel or Filters control.

What Good Looks Like

There’s no target. A referrer worth keeping sends sessions that convert, not just sessions. Compare Conversion Rate and Revenue next to Sessions.

A large (direct / none) row is normal. It holds every visitor das Pixel couldn’t read a referrer for.

What to Do About It

  • A referrer with many sessions and a low Conversion Rate: check the page they land on in Entry Pages.
  • A referrer with a high Conversion Rate: look for ways to get more from it, such as a partnership or a listing.
  • A search engine or social site at the top: tag your own links there, so Sessions by Source & Channel can sort them into channels.
