MCP Server

The MCP server connects an AI assistant, such as Claude, to your By the Numbers data. Once it’s connected, you can ask the assistant about your store in its own chat, and it looks up the answers in By the Numbers.

The MCP page, with Connect an AI Assistant and Connected Apps

How It Works

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard AI apps use to reach other services. By the Numbers’ MCP server is at https://bythenumbersapp.com/mcp.

The assistant reaches your data through tools. Each tool does one thing, such as running a report or listing your segments. The assistant picks the tools it needs for your question, and can use several in a row.

  • Each connection belongs to one team member and one store. It sees that store’s data and nothing from any other store.
  • A connection can read, and can make changes too if you allow it. What an AI Assistant Can and Can’t Change covers the limits.
  • If you leave the team or are removed from it, your connections stop working at once.

What an Assistant Can Look Up

  • The reports your store has in Reports, with your own date range and filters
  • Sales, products, customers, segments, loyalty, lifetime value and cohorts
  • Profit, returns, refunds and inventory
  • Advertising, Klaviyo and Google Analytics performance
  • das Pixel’s status and first-party ROAS
  • Dashboards, forecasts, goals and annotations
  • Your integrations and their recent syncs
  • Your team, store settings and preferences
  • Help center articles

An assistant can also export a report as a CSV file, if you have the Export data permission on your team.

It can ask Copilot, By the Numbers’ own analyst, a question too. Copilot works through the question with its own tools and sends back a full answer.

If Copilot hasn’t finished after 55 seconds, the assistant gets a message to try asking again. Copilot explains what Copilot can answer.

What It Means for You

  • You can ask about your store from the AI app you already use, and the answers come from your store’s own data.
  • Whatever a tool returns, including customer names and contact details, goes to the AI app you connected. That app handles it under its own terms.
  • The MCP page charts calls over the last 90 days: every call by day, the 15 most-used tools, and the 10 team members who made the most calls.
  • Changes an assistant makes show in the Audit Log with AI Assistant (MCP) as their source, for the areas the Audit Log covers.
