Inventory Demand

Inventory Demand shows how long the stock of each product variant will last at its recent selling pace, and the date it’s on track to run out.

The Inventory Demand report, with charts of products by stock status and days to stockout, and a table of every variant with units on hand and the date it is forecast to run out.

How It’s Calculated

Each row of the table is one variant of an active, published product. Variants with no sales in the last 30 days are listed too.

  • Product: the product, its variant, and how many days it has been live.
  • On Hand: the variant’s stock in Shopify.
  • DTOS: days to stockout, which is On Hand divided by Avg Units/Day (30d), rounded to a whole day.
  • Forecasted OOS Date: the date the report was built, plus the days of stock rounded up, shown as year, month and day.
  • Status: how much stock is left, as described below.
  • Avg Units/Day (7d): units sold in the last 7 days, divided by 7.
  • Avg Units/Day (30d): units sold in the last 30 days, divided by 30.
  • Avg Units/Day (Prev 30d): units sold in the 30 days before that, divided by 30.
  • Units Sold (30d): units sold in the last 30 days.

The 3 Avg Units/Day columns show 1 decimal place. DTOS is worked out from the exact average.

DTOS is 0 when On Hand is 0 or less. It’s N/A, and Forecasted OOS Date is a dash, when the variant has stock but sold nothing in the last 30 days.

The report assumes the last 30 days of sales continue. It doesn’t allow for seasons, promotions or stock you’ve ordered but not received.

Status

Status compares On Hand with the 30-day sales pace:

Status When
Oversold On Hand is below 0
Out of Stock On Hand is 0, or the stock lasts less than 1 day
Urgent The stock lasts 1–7 days
Low More than 7 and up to 30 days
Medium More than 30 and up to 60 days
High More than 60 days
Unknown The variant sold nothing in the last 30 days, and On Hand is above 0

The names don’t run from low to high risk. High is the most stock, and Urgent is the least.

Charts

The 3 charts count variants, and follow the filters above them:

  • Inventory Status Mix: the number of variants in each status.
  • DTOS Distribution: the number of variants with a DTOS of 0, 1–7, 8–30, 31–60 or 61 and more days, or N/A.
  • Projected Stockouts by Month: the number of variants whose Forecasted OOS Date falls in each month. A variant that’s already out of stock counts in the current month.

What Counts

  • Sales are the units on orders from every sales channel. Orders that were canceled, or whose payment was voided or expired, don’t count.
  • Refunds and returns aren’t taken off.
  • “Last 7 days” and “last 30 days” run back from the moment the report was built, not from midnight.
  • On Hand comes from your product list. The report is rebuilt each time that list refreshes, usually every 8–12 hours: see How Often Is My Data Updated?.
  • The page doesn’t show when it was last built, and sales or stock changes since then aren’t in it.

The report has no date range, Segment or Sales Channel. Filter it with Status, Product Type and Vendor. The charts and the table follow them.

What Good Looks Like

A healthy variant has more days of stock than your supplier takes to deliver. If restocking a product takes 3 weeks, a variant with fewer than 21 days of stock is already too late to reorder in time. Compare DTOS with your lead time, not only Status.

A variant that sold 1 unit in 30 days sells about 0.03 units a day, which the table shows as 0.0. Its DTOS is 30 times its On Hand. Read DTOS next to Units Sold (30d).

What to Do About It

  • Urgent and Low: reorder, starting with the variants that have the shortest DTOS and the highest Avg Units/Day (30d).
  • Out of Stock: pause ads and promotions that point to the variant. Check whether it’s meant to be out of stock.
  • Oversold: check the count in Shopify. Orders are already coming in for stock that isn’t there.
  • A pace that’s rising: when Avg Units/Day (7d) is above Avg Units/Day (30d), the 30-day figure understates the pace, and the variant runs out sooner than DTOS says.
  • High: keep ordering lean, or promote it to move the stock.
