Product Momentum
Product Momentum compares each product’s sales in the second half of your date range with the first half, and scores whether it is rising, steady or falling.

How It’s Calculated
The report splits your date range into 2 halves. The first half is the “prior” period and the second half is the current one. A range of 30 days gives 15 days each.
A range with an odd number of days gives the extra day to the second half.
Each row is one product. The columns are:
- Prior Gross Sales: the product’s Gross Sales in the first half.
- Gross Sales: its Gross Sales in the second half. Gross Sales is each item’s price times its quantity, before discounts, shipping, tax and returns.
- Δ Gross Sales: the change in Gross Sales from the first half to the second, as a share of the first half. It shows 0 when the first half had no sales.
- Momentum Score: a score built from the change in 3 figures between the halves.
- Trend: Rising at a score of 20 or more, Falling at -20 or less, and Steady in between.
The Momentum Score
For Gross Sales, items sold and the number of customers who bought, the report takes the change between the halves as a share of the first half. Then it adds them up:
- 45 times the change in Gross Sales
- 35 times the change in items sold
- 20 times the change in customers
A product’s score is that total times its items sold in the second half divided by 10, capped at 1. A product with fewer than 10 items sold in the second half has its score scaled down.
A figure that was 0 in the first half adds nothing to the score. A product that only started selling in the second half scores 0 and shows Steady.
The table lists up to 500 products, with the highest score first. It leaves out products that sold no items in the second half, so a product that sold only in the first half doesn’t appear.
What Counts
- Orders that were canceled, or whose payment was voided or expired, don’t count.
- Refunds and returns aren’t taken off. A refunded item still counts as sold.
- Dates follow your store’s time zone, and amounts are in your store’s currency.
- With a Segment picked, only orders from customers in that segment count. Sales Channel and Filters limit the report to matching orders.
This report has no Compare control, no chart and no totals row.
What Good Looks Like
There’s no target. A Rising product is selling more, to more customers, than it was earlier in the range. A Falling product is doing the reverse.
Scores built on few sales swing widely. Check Gross Sales and Prior Gross Sales before acting on a score.
What to Do About It
- A Rising product: check its stock, and consider featuring it. Product Velocity shows how its orders have moved over the last 120 days.
- A Falling product: look for a cause, such as a stockout, a price change or the end of a promotion.
- A newly launched product: it can show Steady until it has sales in both halves. Product Lifecycle Stage marks a product New when its first sale in the date range is 45 days or less before the end of the range.
