Universal Search

Universal Search finds any report, page or saved item in By the Numbers from one search box. Press ⌘K on a Mac, or Ctrl+K on Windows, from any page, or choose the search box in the top bar.

The search box open over a page, with matching reports, dashboards and segments listed in groups

How It Works

What It Searches

Type a word or two and results appear as you type, in groups:

  • Reports, matched on their names, descriptions and related words. Searching aov finds Average Order Value.
  • Pages, such as Pulse, Loyalty, Costs or Team.
  • Integrations, such as Klaviyo or Google Ads.
  • Your Dashboards, Segments, Goals and Forecasts.
  • Products and Customers, once you’ve typed at least 3 characters. Customers are found by name or email.

Every word you type has to match, so sales country finds reports about sales by country. Most groups show up to 5 results, and Customers up to 8.

Products and customers come from your store’s data, so they take a moment longer and appear below the other groups. Customer results only appear if your store can open customer pages.

Before You Type

With the box empty, Suggested lists up to 6 reports. First come the ones you’ve opened most recently in this browser. The rest of the list is filled, in order, from Total Sales, Average Order Value, P&L, Cohort Retention, First-time Customers and Inventory Demand.

Results You Can’t Open Yet

A result that needs something first is dimmed, and its label says what’s missing:

  • Connect: the report needs an integration you haven’t connected. Choosing it opens Integrations.
  • Finish Setup: the integration is connected but needs a setting chosen, such as a Google Analytics property. Choosing it opens Integrations.
  • Coming Soon: the report isn’t open to your store yet. Choosing it opens the report’s page.

A result labeled Syncing isn’t dimmed. Its integration is still bringing in its first data. The report opens, and fills in when the sync is done.

Asking Copilot Instead

When nothing matches, the box says so and offers Ask Copilot. Press Enter, or choose it, and Copilot opens with your words as the first question of a new conversation.

Your question isn’t added to the page address or your browser history. If your store can’t use Copilot, the box says so instead of offering it.

Moving Around With the Keyboard

  • Use the up and down arrow keys to move through the results.
  • Press Enter to open the highlighted one.
  • Press Esc, or ⌘K or Ctrl+K again, to close the box.

The box starts empty each time you open it.

What It Means for You

Universal Search is the quickest way to reach a report when you know roughly what it’s called but not where it lives. Try the word you’d use yourself, such as refunds, repeat or ads.

To turn it off for yourself, open Preferences, clear Enable Universal Search on the Display tab and choose Save Preferences. It stays on for the rest of your team.
