Promotion Efficiency by Product

Promotion Efficiency by Product shows how much discount each product sold with, and the sales it earned for each unit of discount. It shows which products lean on promotions.

The Promotion Efficiency by Product report, a table with one row per product, its top discount code, orders, share of discounted orders, gross sales, discounts, discount rate and efficiency.

How It’s Calculated

Each row is one product. The columns are:

  • Top Discount Code: the code used on the orders where this product’s discounted items made the most net sales. It is blank when none of those orders used a code.
  • Orders: the number of orders that include the product.
  • Discounted %: the share of those orders where the product’s item had a discount.
  • Gross Sales: each item’s price times its quantity, before discounts, shipping, tax and returns.
  • Discounts: the discounts Shopify records on those items.
  • Discount Rate: Discounts divided by Gross Sales.
  • Efficiency: Net Sales divided by Discounts, where Net Sales is Gross Sales minus Discounts. An efficiency of 9 means net sales are 9 times the discounts.

A product with no discounts has nothing to divide by, so Efficiency shows 0. It sorts last, though it is the best case. Discounted % and Discount Rate show 0% for it too.

Codes show in capitals. If an order used 2 codes, they show together, separated by a comma, as one entry. A discount that needs no code, such as an automatic one, can’t appear in Top Discount Code, but its amount is in Discounts.

A product appears only if it has at least 5 orders in the date range. The table lists up to 500 products, with the highest Efficiency first, then the most Net Sales.

What Counts

  • Orders that were canceled, or whose payment was voided or expired, don’t count.
  • Refunds and returns aren’t taken off. A refunded item still counts as sold.
  • Dates follow your store’s time zone, and amounts are in your store’s currency.
  • With a Segment picked, only orders from customers in that segment count. Sales Channel and Filters limit the report to matching orders.

This report has no Compare control, no chart and no totals row.

What Good Looks Like

There’s no target. A higher Efficiency means the product earns more for each unit of discount. A product with a high Discounted % and a low Efficiency is selling mostly because of promotions.

A product with an Efficiency of 0 and a Discounted % of 0% hasn’t been discounted at all. Don’t read it as inefficient.

What to Do About It

  • A low Efficiency and a high Discounted %: the product depends on discounts. Test a smaller discount, or a bundle, before the next promotion.
  • A Top Discount Code that stands out: open Sales by Discount Code to see that code across your whole store.
  • A high Efficiency: the product sells with little help. Keep it at full price.
